Workshop with our partners from Laos: MAF and NUOL

In August 2016, we held a workshop between the team of Capacity Lab at the University of Bremen and our partners from Lao PDR. The workshop aimed to investigate the further development of the collaboration and to discuss the future of Mobile4D. Mobile4D is a software framework that utilizes ICT to build a rapid communication channel between district officers and administrations in disaster situations. The system has been jointly developed by the team of Capacity Lab and the Lao partners, and it has been deployed in three Lao provinces since 2015.

Dr. Thatheva Saphangthong from the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Foresty (MAF), Dr. Chanthavong Houngphet, and Dr. Sithong Thongmanivong from the Faculty of Forestry of the National University of Laos (NUOL), and Prof. Peter Haddawy, Faculty of Information and Communication Technology, Mahidol University (Bangkok, Thailand) actively participated in the workshop. The workshop was supported by a visit by Prof. Dr. Yasemin Karakaşoğlu, Vice President for International Affairs and Diversity of the University of Bremen.

During the workshop, together with our partners from the Laos PDR we planned for the follows:

  • extension of the functionality of Mobile4D over the entire country,
  • additional functionality supporting daily use of the system, and
  • enhancement of the system by adding more disaster types.

As a result of the workshop, we are preparing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the participating partners.
